How does a waterless urinal work?
Waterless urinals use a trap and cartridge to create a one-way seal. Urine passes through; a sealing liquid or membrane blocks odours from the drain. There is no flush. The bowl is cleaned regularly and the cartridge or seal is replaced on schedule.
Do waterless urinals smell?
A correctly installed and maintained waterless urinal should not smell. Most odours come from expired cartridges, harsh chemicals that dissolve the seal, or missing/degraded trap components. Use the recommended cleaner and replace consumables on time.
Are waterless urinals hygienic?
Yes. With no flush plume there is often less aerosolisation than flushing bowls. Hygiene depends on correct cleaning, approved chemicals, and timely cartridge changes. Non-porous bowl materials also help reduce bacterial harbourage.
How much water can I save with a waterless urinal?
Savings are typically 100% of urinal flushing water. Switching from ~1–2 L per flush at a few hundred uses per week can save tens of thousands of litres per year plus sewer discharge costs.
What height should a urinal be installed in Australia?
Follow the manufacturer’s template and your plumber’s advice. General rim heights are around 610–650 mm for junior and 650–700+ mm for adult installations. Accessible layouts must meet local accessibility requirements; check project specs.
How do you clean and maintain a waterless urinal?
Daily: spray with approved cleaner, wipe, and lightly rinse if specified. Weekly: wipe outside surfaces and check for debris. Periodic: replace cartridge/membrane/sealant per the manufacturer interval, sooner in high traffic. Avoid harsh acids, bleaches and solvents.
Which chemicals are safe to use?
Use the brand’s recommended neutral cleaner. Avoid chlorine, acidic descalers and oil-based products as they can damage seals or membranes and void warranties.
Do I need WaterMark-certified products?
For Australian plumbing work, use appropriately certified products (e.g., WaterMark where applicable) to support compliance and inspection. Confirm requirements with your licensed plumber
Which is better for busy facilities: flushing or waterless?
Both can work. Waterless is strong where water/sewer costs are high, sustainability targets apply, or pipe capacity is limited. Flushing can suit sites favouring familiar maintenance. Many facilities run a mix
What ongoing costs should I expect?
Budget for consumables (cartridges/seals and cleaner) and normal cleaning labour. Despite consumables, many sites reduce total cost of ownership via water and sewer savings
